Barkwheats' Local Ingredient Choices
Happy Plants Love Compost!
Every time you throw away a banana peel, carrot peels, or any food scraps, you're throwing away a precious resource! Things like kitchen scraps, newspaper, paper egg cartons, cereal boxes, garden clippings and the like can be turned into a natural soil amendment we call compost.
How can you help the Earth by choosing to feed your dog Barkwheats?
Our box is compostable: By having a box made of 100% recycled paperboard and printed with vegetable based inks, you can toss this right into your compost bin to break down and add nice brown matter to your bin to help with that perfect mix of brown to green matter. The white coating on the box is a kaolin clay, a natural substance to help the inks stand out their best.
Our bag is even compostable: You heard that right! The inner bag of Barkwheats is made from the cellulose of sustainably harvested cottonwood trees. The cellophane is the NatureFlex™ film from Innovia Films. When your dog has finished chowing down, just pop the bag into the compost and in a 6-8 weeks in a hot compost, it'll be degraded.

What Is Compost?
Food For Your Garden - By mimicking what happens in nature, when you compost organic materials you are adding nutrients into your soil. And unlike commercial fertilizer, compost contains many trace nutrients to help your plants grow even more.
Prevent Landfill Buildup - It is said that 20-30% of landfill content is food scraps and yard waste. When you choose to compost your food scraps and yard waste, you're helping reduce the levels of our ever increasing landfills.
Improve Your Soil - In using compost, you improve the tilth of your soil as compost will aerate your soil and allow the roots of your plants more "breathing room" to grow strong. Compost also retains a higher percentage of water, so you don't have to water as often and erode the soil.
