Barkwheats' Local Ingredient Choices
Our Triple Bottom Line
Social Mission: Barkwheats Dog Biscuits is dedicated to the enhancement of human life by bringing wholesome and nutritious food to the dogs that make our lives complete. Barkwheats participates in community forums and discussions, bringing ideas on sustaining local business and agriculture in Maine.
Environmental Mission: Barkwheats purchases more than 95% of the ingredients used from Maine sources, mostly within the Mid Coast region. By purchasing locally, we help to sustain small, local farms and the communities surrounding them. Our ingredients are all natural and organic, sustaining a healthy ecology. Our packaging is made of a 100% recycled box and a biodegradable cellulose bag, reducing the waste stream otherwise created.
Economic Mission: Barkwheats Dog Biscuits sustains profitability in part by minimizing costs associated with, but not limited to: energy consumption, waste elimination, and ingredient transport, use of hand operated machinery, CFL lights, re-using and recycling, and purchasing local goods and services.
Be sure to check out the media attention that Barkwheats has been getting!
Meet Baxter! He's an 85 pound Rott/Lab mix that we fell in love with at a rescue organization in Indiana. He's full of kisses and love and absolutely loves meeting new people. He, along with his sister, were the primary taste testers for Barkwheats and he loved every minute of it. Bax is a dog of dogs, and only 2 years old, so we're very happy to be able to live long, happy lives together.
Here's Sabine! When she was 9 months old we got an email telling us about this adorable pup, and we had to take her in. Give her a back rub and she'll be your best friend forever. A 45 pound Whippet/Lab mix, she runs like none other. At the dog park, it's only the greyhounds that can outpace her. She's a lover at heart, but a bit timid at first when meeting new people. She's about 6 months younger than Bax and we're very happy to have found her.
This is Chris! He's the baker behind Barkwheats. His family has been in the food business for decades and has it in his blood to create wholesome foods for those he loves. A musician his entire life, he graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2003 and fell in love with a radio girl in Maine. When he's not in the bakery, he's at the community radio station volunteering and editing radio shows.
